Natalie Garcia Ayala is the artist of the month at Galena High School. The senior says she enjoys being creative and showing simple things and wants her work to have meaning and have symbols. Garcia is interested in pursuing graphic design or baking/pastries. She became interested in art during middle school. Her teacher was John Schober. Garcia now enjoys working in clay, paint, pencils and on the computer. She has been helping her mom bake cakes for family members since she was four or five years of age.

As part of the “Reading in the Parks” program, educators Wes Heiar and Kristi Alvarado traveled to four parks Thursday, Aug. 4 in East Dubuque with books to give away. On Sunday, May 7, the Galena High School class of 2023 graduated among their parents, friends and peers. After the ceremony, all 57 graduates threw up their caps to celebrate the last four years coming to a close and look forward to the experiences to come. Galena held its earlier-than-usual graduation ceremony to facilitate an earlier school closing date to facilitate the construction project at the middle school. In its June 7 edition, The Galena Gazette will feature a special graduation section honoring all of the area’s graduates as well as photos from graduations. Graduation dates for other area schools are River Ridge, May 12, 7 p.m.; Warren, May 19, 6:30 p.m.; Scales Mound, May 21, 1 p.m.; Southwestern, May 21, 1 p.m.; Stockton, May 21, 2 p.m.; East Dubuque, June 2, 7 p.m.

Southwestern graduates turn their tassels as they prepare to throw their caps in the air during the Southwestern High School graduation that was held on May 22 at the Southwestern Middle School gymnasium at noon. Southwestern had 40 students graduate in the class of 2022. Students heard speeches from valedictorian Alisa Ramaker and salutatorian Sabrina Splinter, along with a welcome address by class president Nathaniel Reiff.
